Spritz

Black Bear

Female

Current Guest

Her mom died in a vehicle collision on the Quesnel Hixon Rd. Board member and capture volunteer Hazel Massier set a trap and after a few days captured one of the two cubs. Hazel never saw a second cub so we are not sure if the report was accurate. Spritz is a bit of a loner as the newest bear she hasn't bonded with anyone yet, but she is very curious and starting to warm up to the group.

Angelika, Jesse & Melissa worked on this rescue after being called by Nisga’a Enforcement Officers about a mother bear hit on the highway. In a joint effort with the Nisga’a officers, both girls could be captured. Prosecco is very curious while champagne is more reserved.

The young pup was monitored on private property in West Kelowna for 24hours and then captured by Conservation Officers. The Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society transferred the pup to NLWS as we already had a pup. Cappuccino is best friends with Macchiato and the two pups love to play with each other.

The pup was found near Vernon malnourished and with small injuries. The rescuers met with Angelika & Peter to get the pup safely to Smithers. Macchiato has made a slow but steady recovery and is a very shy personality that likes to hide from caregivers.

Kilkenny

Black Bear

Male

Current Guest

Board member and capture volunteer Hazel Massier reported that this cubs rescue was the fastest she ever done. Seen alone for a while, she found the cub on a small dead tree, set the trap and he climbed right down and walked in. Is one of the most dramatic cubs we've ever met. He is very close with the other bears in the group and though he often isn't playing with the others, he is always in with the group. He is definitely small but mighty.

Pina Colada & Mai Tai

Black Bear

Siblings (Female & Male)

Current Guest

Unfortunately their mother was a problem bear near Fruitvale and was shot. Board member and capture volunteer Sue Wrigley worked with Conservation Officers to get both cubs captured and transported. Both cubs are more cautious, but have become close with the others and can now be found playing with some of the bigger bears in the group.

Candy & Stout

Black Bear

Siblings (Female & Male)

Current Guest

Found near Vernon alone and crying, monitoring showed no mom in the area. When traps were set both cubs were caught quickly, which proved they were very hungry. Board member and capture volunteer Lydia Koot picked them up and arranged transport. Stout loves playing around with everyone else, she's very active. Candy is more reserved than her sister but is also quite nosy.

Cider

Black Bear

Female

Current Guest

Captured by Board member and capture volunteer Lydia Koot near Faquier, the 9lb cub had lost her mom when she broke into a chicken coop. The property owner was not aware there was a cub until after and immediately alerted us. She is very persistent, forced her friendship on gimlet and she is now a social butterfly in the group.

Fireball

Black Bear

Female

Current Guest

Fireball was in such rough shape that board member /capture volunteer Kim Balcom could catch her by hand near Kimberley. We don’t know what happened, but suspect a vehicle collision as weight was not bad at 14.4lb. Fireball is a bit of an elusive cub, her best friends are Candy & Stout.

Mojito

Moose

Female

Current Guest

This calf had us worried as he was found in a location very close to the highway, river and train traffic at Fisherman’s Memorial Park in Terrace. To give him time to reunite with mom, we left him over night which did rob us of some sleep, as we feared he might get in trouble. Unfortunately mom did not return and NLWS volunteer Danny Campo was able to catch him and transport him to the shelter the next day. Mojito is the big brother to our 2 female calves for sure, he is the first to go out exploring, to come back for food and keep an eye on what's going on around the enclosure.

Earl Grey & Chai

Black Bear

Siblings (Male & Female)

Current Guest

These cubs are the only survivors of 5. The report of a sow shot and left by the roadside came from Conservation Officers. Despite rescuers getting to the site within hours they only found 3 of the reported 5 cubs. Within a few days all 3 could be captured, but one died shortly after arrival. We searched for several more days for the remaining 2, but never found any trace. Chai is our sleeping beauty that can most times be found taking a nap. Earl is the quiet tough guy.

Molson

Black Bear

Male

Current Guest

Kim & Sola made the trip near Terrace for this little guy. We don’t know why he was alone, but at 22.8lb he sure was in good shape. This big cub is a curious goof and often a bit of a loner.

Kombucha

Moose

Female

Current Guest

After a dramatic rescue when found drowning near Moberly Lake, Kombucha settled in very well. Like we often face with moose calves she battled diarrhoea for weeks, but finally overcame the stress induced condition. She is the more dominant female, but very close with her adoptive siblings and likes exploring.

Moonshine

Moose

Female

Current Guest

Moonshine was found in the pouring rain on a Forest Service RD near Terrace. As always monitoring calves in such conditions is a big worry for accidents to happen, but we don’t want to miss a chance to reunite them with their mom. So hours seemed to crawl as we waited. Volunteer Adrienne Comeau kept us posted and finally captured the calf and transported her to the shelter. Moonshine faced months of joint infections at the shelter, but to our never ending joy made a full recovery. She is a sweetheart, very attached to her adoptive siblings and is curious.

Gimlet

Black Bear

Female

Current Guest

Found on the road near Trail, Gimlet needed help desperately as a fall had caused a fractured femur. Weighing in at a mere 4.5lb she also was way below the normal weight of a cub her age. Board member and capture volunteer Sue Wrigley arranged surgery at the Nelson Animal Hospital to set Gimlet’s bones and stabilise her for transport. At the shelter she was constantly monitored until a few weeks later the plates and screws could be removed with another surgery. She is feisty for her size and loves to play with the large boys.

May 16, 2025

Miller

Black Bear

Male

Current Guest

Miller wasn’t only small (weight only 7.5lb at intake) but also very elusive. We followed reports for several weeks in the Kispiox area before a resident was able to trap the now very emaciated cub. Gratefully lacking proper nutrition was his only problem and with careful feeding he made a very good recovery. Starting out very shy Miller is now best friends with Whiskey and mealtime is his favourite part of the day.

Pepsi, Crush & Sprite

Black Bear

Siblings (Male, Male & Female)

Current Guest

Their mom was shot as a trouble bear by a resident near Burns Lake, but lucky for the cubs Conservation Officers were quickly able to capture them. The two boys are very playful and are constantly instigating roughhousing in the enclosure. Sprite is more reserved, but still quite bubbly.

May 5, 2025

Tequila, Baccari & Mimosa

Black Bear

Sibings (Female, Male & Female)

Current Guest

The siblings lost their mom to a suspected illegal shooting near Dawson Creek. Kennedy & Angelika spend several days trying to rescue the reluctant cubs. Sassy Tequila has a big attitude. The more quiet Bacardi still loves roughhousing and Mimosa is more the observer often seen to watch things from a higher vantage point.

April 25, 2025

Shirley & Temple

Black Bear

Siblings (Female & Male)

Current Guest

The cubs lost their mom to a vehicle accident near Trail. Board member and capture volunteer Sue Wrigley worked with Conservation Officers to facilitate the rescue. Weighing in at a respective 14/13lb they were in excellent shape. Both cubs have big personalities. Temple is a good/trouble maker and Shirley is queen bee energy.

April 24, 2025

Whiskey

Black Bear

Male

Current Guest

A 3 lb cub was found alone near Birken, BC on April 24. A citizen alerted NLWS, and board member/capture volunteer Lydia Koot brought him to Smithers. He arrived malnourished with infected puncture wounds, but after treatment and careful feeding he recovered quickly. By August 17 he was 64.4 lb—about 20× his intake weight—and is now healthy and ready to hibernate with the other cubs in November. He loves peanut butter!  That works.

Meeko

Raccoon

Male

Permanent Resident

Meeko was found by a member of the public in Victoria BC as a very young pup and traveled with the couple for several months before turning him in with Conservation Officers in Smithers. By this time he was VERY habituated, which made release impossible. He now has a permanent home with us and is an ambassador for his wild cousins. Meeko is such a sweet boy,and has lots of energy and loves exploring, especially in his new enclosure. He is a very social boy.

Honey

Cougar

Female

Permanent Resident

Honey and a sibling were spotted alone and starving Near Yahk BC. They eluded capture efforts for over a week Before Honey was captured, unfortunately the sibling disappeared soon after. Honey has taken up residence at NLWS as rewilding of cougars is not permitted in BC at this time. Our Animal caretaker Kennedy Harvey has spent a lot of time making the cat more comfortable around humans and keeping her busy with great enrichment ideas. Though she is still nervous around new people, when she's with people she trusts she is very curious and can often be in goofy moods.
