A Heartwarming Rescue Story

We are thrilled to share a heartwarming update from the front lines of wildlife rescue. On Friday, May 3, we responded to a call from Conservation Officer Ron about a pair of orphaned bear cubs whose mother had unfortunately passed away. The urgency of the situation was clear, as the cubs had been without their mother for five days.

Upon arrival at the scene, we found the cubs in a precarious position—about 50 feet up in a decaying Cottonwood tree. Despite the challenges, our dedicated team quickly devised a plan. Setting a ground trap was not an option as the cubs had not descended since their mother's death. Time was critical.

In a remarkable display of courage and innovation, our new friend, Josh, assessed the situation. The original tree was too decayed to climb safely, but undeterred, Josh considered an alternative approach by climbing an adjacent, more stable tree. The tension was palpable as we watched him navigate the fragile branches.

Josh's determination paid off. Although his initial attempt to transfer to the cubs' tree was met with crumbling branches, he finally found a secure spot. With a crash course in using a catch-pole relayed from the ground, Josh skillfully secured each cub and gently lowered them to safety.

We are overjoyed to report that the cubs, now named Orion and Nestor by Josh and his family, are safe and adapting to their new home at NLWS. This rescue was a true testament to the power of teamwork and the spirit of our community.
