My Experiences and Impressions as a Volunteer

I think I had realistic expectations when it came to the physical labour involved in running a wildlife shelter. However, the sheer scope of everything that happens behind the scenes is absolutely overwhelming. I will try to put it into words, although I know I can never truly do it justice.

Let’s start with the infrastructure. The demands are enormous. Enclosures must be species-appropriate, safe, and secure. Building and maintaining them requires time, money, creativity, and a great deal of ingenuity.

Then there are the daily operations, which are challenging in their own right. Beyond the routine care of the animals and their surroundings, unexpected situations constantly arise. There may be an urgent rescue, an animal requiring complex medical treatment, or another unforeseen challenge that demands immediate attention. Flexibility is essential, and teamwork is what keeps everything running.

But the work doesn’t stop there.

Fundraising appeals must be made, and social media channels need to be managed. Communication and collaboration with other organizations and government agencies take time and effort, too.

To keep improving rewilding and release efforts, the organization also undertakes studies and projects, all of which require additional time, expertise, and funding.

Providing comprehensive rescue coverage across British Columbia means relying on a network of volunteers throughout the province. These people dedicate not only their time but also their hearts to helping wildlife in need.

And then there is public education and prevention work, which is incredibly important in reducing the number of animals that need rescuing in the first place.

The list goes on. If I tried to include everything, this text would become far too long! 😉

One aspect that must never be forgotten or underestimated is the immense emotional toll this work takes on staff and volunteers. You share in the suffering of every injured or orphaned animal. Behind every case is a story, often a tragic one, and so often one in which human actions have played a part.

Life is becoming increasingly difficult for wildlife as we continue to encroach on more and more of their habitat. The people working to help these animals carry a tremendous responsibility, often facing heartbreaking situations while doing everything they can to make a difference.

Having gained a glimpse into the incredible complexity of this work, I feel even more grateful for everyone who gives so much of themselves to help wildlife. Their passion, dedication, and commitment deserve to be recognized and appreciated.

Thank you all for everything you do to give something back to the animals. ❤️
