In the midst of our ongoing concerns for orphaned wildlife in the Omineca region, we’re reminded that wildlife receives the care it deserves in other regions—and we couldn’t be more grateful for these wonderful working relationships.

Yesterday, we received a call from COS that a mother bear had been fatally struck on a busy highway near Golden. Tragically, her two cubs were left orphaned and in danger of being struck as well while searching for their deceased mom.

Our amazing board member and capture volunteer, Kim Balcom, was on the road by noon for the three-hour drive to the location. Once there, she carefully set traps on either side of the deceased mother. By 6 p.m., both cubs were safely captured and secure, despite being just feet from a busy highway.

We could not be more grateful to everyone involved in getting these little ones to safety. ❤️

The cubs are now en route to the shelter, where they will remain in our care until June 2027. At that time, they will return to their home region and be released back into the wild.
