Diagnosis: Sarcocystis

Diagnosis: Sarcocystis

The NLWS Team
April 25, 2026

We have preliminary lab results.

The diagnosis is Sarcocystis. This is a parasite that has been shown in both black bears and grizzlies in recent years. It is transmitted through an unknown host so we don’t have to worry about transmission from bear to bear which is a great relief. It is assumed that the host might be meat or fish so we stopped feeding both at this time until we can confirm that the parasite gets killed by freezing.‍

We still have Cider is showing signs and we are treating her with antibiotics and a liver supporting diet. The remaining bears in this group show no signs at this point. However we are aiming to tranquilize all and taking blood samples to check liver function. We do this to catch any onset of symptoms and treat as early as possible. Bears are tough and often don’t show signs until illness is in an advanced state.

If you are able to assist with veterinary costs we would very much appreciate your help.
